C\u00e9sar Baldaccini, known as C\u00e9sar, is a revolutionary sculptor in the 20th century, a major figure of New Realism.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no imagination. It only comes to me with touch and eyes. Without these two elements, the brain does not function. It’s my hands that make my head work. \u00bb<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

C\u00e9sar is a French artist, heir to the tradition of welded sculpture and inventor of new techniques. He worked in plaster before creating his first sculptures in scrap metal. If, for the sake of economy, he turned to inexpensive recycled materials, he very quickly discovered, in metals, the place of expression of his creative power.<\/p>\n

At the same time, his research led him to the invention of more daring creative techniques, first and foremost the \u201ccompression\u201d of automobile bodies. He discovered this technique in 1958, while browsing at a scrap dealer in Gennevilliers. Using a hydraulic press, he compresses cars and exhibits them to the public like sculptures. This act of appropriation was launched as a challenge to the consumer society, moreover his “Compressions” caused a scandal at the May Salon of 1960.<\/p>\n

He then created the polyurethane “Expansions” from 1965, in his hands, the liquid resin spreads horizontally, swells, wrinkles, launches into the void that it molds. The \u201cExpansions\u201d come in bronze variations. This year was also the year in which the artist created one of his best-known pieces: his Thumb, 1.85m high, often reproduced since. The one which was installed in 1994 in the La D\u00e9fense district is 12 meters high. To create these pieces, he uses an “enlarger” and synthetic resin for molding, starting from the idea of \u200b\u200bthe hand, he arrives at the “Thumb”. His Footprints divide criticism and pit supporters of \u201cclassical\u201d vocations on the one hand and defenders of the sculptor\u2019s \u201cavant-garde\u201d creations on the other.<\/p>\n

In 1970, he created the Fist, a monumental sculpture weighing 7 tonnes in polished cast stainless steel, installed on the parade ground at the Lyc\u00e9e Militaire de Saint-Cyr. In 1983, he began creating his Centaur in homage to Picasso, a 4.70 meter high sculpture, completed two years later. The sculpture is installed at the Red Cross intersection in Paris. Also in 1983, C\u00e9sar produced his Homage to Eiffel for the Cartier Foundation in Jouy-en-Josas.<\/p>\n

C\u00e9sar Baldaccini, dit C\u00e9sar<\/strong>, est un sculpteur r\u00e9volutionnaire au XXe si\u00e8cle, figure majeure du Nouveau R\u00e9alisme<\/a>.<\/p>

\u00ab Je n'ai pas d'imagination. Elle ne me vient qu'avec le toucher et les yeux. Sans ces deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments, le cerveau ne fonctionne pas. Ce sont mes mains qui font travailler ma t\u00eate. \u00bb<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

C\u00e9sar<\/strong> est un artiste fran\u00e7ais, h\u00e9ritier de la tradition de la sculpture soud\u00e9e et inventeur de techniques nouvelles. Il travaille le pl\u00e2tre avant de r\u00e9aliser ses premi\u00e8res sculptures en ferraille. S'il se tourne, par souci d'\u00e9conomie, vers des mat\u00e9riaux de r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration peu co\u00fbteux, il d\u00e9couvre tr\u00e8s vite, dans les m\u00e9taux, le lieu d'expression de sa puissance cr\u00e9ative.<\/p>

Parall\u00e8lement, ses recherches le conduisent \u00e0 l\u2019invention de techniques de cr\u00e9ation plus audacieuses, avec en premier lieu les \"compressions\" de carrosseries d\u2019automobiles. Il d\u00e9couvre cette technique en 1958, en fouinant chez un ferrailleur de Gennevilliers. A l\u2019aide d' une presse hydraulique, il compresse des voitures et les expose au public comme des sculptures. Cet acte d\u2019appropriation, est lanc\u00e9 comme un d\u00e9fi \u00e0 la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de consommation, d'ailleurs ses \"Compressions\"<\/strong> font scandale au salon de Mai de 1960.<\/p>

Il cr\u00e9\u00e9 ensuite les \"Expansions\"<\/strong> de polyur\u00e9thane \u00e0 partir de 1965, entre ses mains, la r\u00e9sine liquide s\u2019\u00e9tale \u00e0 l\u2019horizontale, se gonfle, plisse, se lance \u00e0 l\u2019assaut du vide qu\u2019elle moule. Les \"Expansions\" se d\u00e9clinent en variations de bronze. Cette ann\u00e9e est \u00e9galement celle o\u00f9 l\u2019artiste cr\u00e9e l\u2019une de ses pi\u00e8ces les plus connues : son Pouce<\/strong>, haut de 1,85m, souvent reproduit depuis. Celui qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 install\u00e9 en 1994 dans le quartier de la D\u00e9fense fait 12 m\u00e8tres de haut. Pour cr\u00e9er ces pi\u00e8ces, il utilise un \"agrandisseur\" et de la r\u00e9sine synth\u00e9tique pour le moulage, partant de l\u2019id\u00e9e de la main, il arrive au \"Pouce\"<\/strong>. Ses Empreintes divisent la critique et opposent d'une part les partisans des vocations \"classiques\" et d'autre part les d\u00e9fenseurs des cr\u00e9ations \"avant-gardistes\" du sculpteur<\/strong>.<\/p>

En 1970, il cr\u00e9e le Poing<\/strong>, sculpture monumentale de 7 tonnes en fonte d'acier inoxydable polie, install\u00e9e sur la place d'armes au Lyc\u00e9e militaire de Saint-Cyr. En 1983, il entreprend la r\u00e9alisation de son Centaure<\/strong> en hommage \u00e0 Picasso, sculpture de 4,70 m\u00e8tres de haut, achev\u00e9e deux ans plus tard. La sculpture est install\u00e9e au carrefour de la Croix-Rouge \u00e0 Paris. Toujours en 1983, C\u00e9sar r\u00e9alise son Hommage \u00e0 Eiffel pour la Fondation Cartier \u00e0 Jouy-en-Josas.<\/p>
